JALDOOT App: A Combined Effort of Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj

The Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj have jointly developed the JALDOOT App, which will be used across the country to capture the water level of selected two to three wells in a village.

JALDOOT App: Used in Online and Offline Modes

The app can be used in both online and offline modes. So, when the water level of a well is captured even when the internet connection is unavailable, the data captured will be stored in mobile and when the internet connection is available, the data will be synchronized with the central server.

Officers, who are named Jaldoots, have been assigned to take measurements of open wells in every village twice a year. Every year, the manual measurement of water levels will be conducted from May 1 to 31 and October 1 to 31.

After the collection of the data, it will be uploaded with geo-tagged images on the app. The data collected by the Jaldoots will be integrated with the database of National Water Informatics Centre (NWIC). Further, these collected data can be used for analysis and can generate various useful reports for the benefit of various stakeholders.

Why JALDOOT App? To Improve Water Management in Rural and Urban Areas

The country has taken many steps, like various watershed development, afforestation, water body development and rainwater harvesting, to improve the water management in both the rural and urban areas. But the ground water level has reached critical levels in many parts of the country, resulting in significant reduction of water levels triggering distress to farmers.

Thus, it has become necessary to measure and observe the levels of water tables across the country. The Government of India expressed that this app will facilitate in observing water tables across the country and the resulting data can be used for Gram Panchayat Development and Mahatma Gandhi NREGA plans.

The app will provide panchayats with robust data that can be used for better planning of works in the villages and can be used for different kinds of research and other purposes
