We are all eagerly looking forward to celebrating International Women's Day. To make this occasion even more special, various events and activities are organized to honor women. However, this year, we will celebrate Women's Day in a unique way by learning about remarkable women from different states across the country-women who have not only brought recognition to their home states but have also made significant contributions in their respective fields.

International Women's Day is observed every year on March 8 to raise awareness about women's rights and acknowledge their achievements. In this article, leading up to March 8, we will highlight the inspiring contributions of extraordinary women from various states. Today, let's take a closer look at the incredible journey of Bachendri Pal who made Uttarakhand proud. Hailing from a small village in Uttarakhand, she not only became India's first woman to scale Mount Everest but also inspired generations of women to dream big and push beyond limits. Her journey from the foothills of the Himalayas to the highest peak in the world is a story of resilience, determination, and unmatched courage.
Early Life and Education
Born on May 24, 1954, in Nakuri village of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, Bachendri Pal was raised in a modest family. From a young age, she displayed an adventurous spirit, often participating in sports and trekking activities. Her passion for the mountains was evident early on when, at the age of 12, she successfully completed a school trip to a 13,123-ft high peak, an experience that sowed the seeds of her future in mountaineering.
Despite societal norms that often discouraged girls from pursuing adventure sports, Bachendri continued her education. She earned her master's degree in Sanskrit and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from D.A.V. Post Graduate College, Dehradun. However, her heart was set on mountaineering, and she pursued formal training at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi.
Historic Everest Ascent
Bachendri Pal's life changed forever in 1984 when she was selected for the Indian Everest Expedition. On May 23, 1984, just a day before her 30th birthday, she created history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 meters).
The journey was far from easy. The team encountered fierce storms and avalanches, and several members had to turn back due to extreme conditions. However, Bachendri's determination pushed her forward, and she stood on the top of the world, making every Indian proud.
Post-Everest Achievements
Following her Everest feat, Bachendri Pal continued to contribute to Indian mountaineering and adventure sports:
- She led the First All-Women Indo-Nepalese Everest Expedition in 1993, empowering women in adventure sports.
- She spearheaded the 'Mission Gange' Expedition, a rafting and trekking journey along the Ganga to promote environmental awareness.
- She worked as the Director of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), training young mountaineers.
Awards and Recognitions
For her exceptional achievements, Bachendri Pal has received several prestigious awards:
- Padma Bhushan (2019) - India's third-highest civilian award
- Padma Shri (1984) - For her outstanding contribution to sports
- Arjuna Award (1986) - For excellence in mountaineering
- National Adventure Award (1994) - For promoting adventure sports in India
Bachendri Pal's success shattered stereotypes and encouraged women to pursue their dreams in fields once dominated by men. She remains an icon of courage, perseverance, and adventure, proving that with the right mindset, no peak-literal or metaphorical-is too high to conquer.
Her journey is not just about climbing mountains; it's about rising above challenges, believing in oneself, and creating a legacy that inspires generations.
On this International Women's Day 2025, we celebrate Bachendri Pal, a true daughter of Uttarakhand, whose achievements continue to elevate her state's identity on the global stage.
