INS Mormugao: The Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, will commission INS Mormugao at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai today, December 18, 2022. This event marks the formal induction into the Navy of the second of the four "Visakhapatnam" class destroyers, which was designed indigenously by the Indian Navy's in house organization, the Warship Design Bureau, and was constructed by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.

  • The magnificent ship is 163 meters long and 17 meters wide, with a displacement of 7,400 tons. It is regarded as one of the most powerful warships ever built in India. The ship is set in motion by four powerful gas turbines in a combined gas and gas (COGAG) configuration, capable of achieving speeds in excess of 30 knots.
  • Mormugao is stuffed with sophisticated "state of the art" weapons as well as sensors such as surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles. The ship is equipped with modern surveillance radar, which provides target data to the gunnery systems of the ship.
  • Torpedo launchers and ASW helicopters (indigenously developed rocket launchers) have developed the ship's anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The ship is fitted to fight under Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) warfare conditions.
  • The distinctive feature of this ship is the high level of indigenization (around 75%) incorporated in the production, accentuating our national aim of "Atma Nirbhar Bharat."
  • Some of the major indigenized equipment / systems onboard Mormugao includes: surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles; Air Missiles, Torpedo Tubes and Launchers, Anti Submarine Rocket Launchers, Super Rapid Gun Mount besides, Combat Mnagemnet System, Fooldable Hanger Doors, Helo Traversing system, Close-in Weapon System and Bow mounted SONAR. Major OEMs as well as small MSMEs such as BEL, L&T, Godrej, Marine Electrical Brahmos, Technico, Kineco, Jeet & Jeet, Sushma Marine, Techno Process, etc. have all contributed to the potency of the Mormugao.
  • Focusing on indigenization as well as self-reliance, in Indian shipyards, 42 out of 44 ships and submarines that were under construction are being built. This helps India enhance its efforts towards 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat."
  • Mormugao, named after the historic port city of Goa on India's west coast, made her first sea voyage on December 19, 2021, during Goa's 60th anniversary of independence from Portuguese rule.
  • Today is the commissioning of the Mormugao, on the eve of Goa Liberation Day and it will further amplify the Indian Navy's mobility, reach, and flexibility towards the accomplishment of its role and tasks in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
