For ages, in Indian households, the first thing in the morning that the men do is read the newspaper. We can even say it has grown to be a part of the daily morning routine of people.

A fun fact about newspapers is that it is the perfect excuse for the men to escape from any fights with their wives, household chores and so on. Today is the day to celebrate the piece of paper that tells us about the world and keeps us updated. Today is Indian Newspaper Day, which is celebrated every year on 29th January.

Father of Newspaper
In 1780, India witnessed the birth of its inaugural newspaper, and the individual singularly responsible for this feat was James Augustus Hickey. As the pivotal figure in journalism, Hickey paved the way for a generation of bold writers in India. An Irishman acknowledged by the British as the 'Father of Indian Press,' James Hickey established the foundations of journalism in the eighteenth century. Operating in Calcutta under the East India Company's dominion, Hickey launched a newspaper named Bengal Gazette, also known as 'Hickey's Bengal Gazette' or the 'Calcutta General Advertiser.' Its inaugural appearance on January 29, 1780, marked the onset of journalism in India, serving as a public watchdog against governmental errors, corruption, and societal misconduct.
Indian Newspaper Day : Historical Background
On January 29, 1780, India witnessed the inception of its first newspaper. Titled "Hicky's Bengal Gazette" or the "Calcutta General Advertiser," this weekly publication marked a significant milestone in communication. Print emerged as the only affordable means of communication that disseminated valuable information. Hicky's Bengal Gazette, published in Kolkata, the then capital, on January 29, 1780, became the first newspaper printed in Asia. During an era when news took days to reach its intended audience, newspapers revolutionized the dissemination of information. However, recognizing the potential threat newspapers posed to their governance, the British authorities halted their publication in 1782.
