Gautam Gambhir, the former World Cup-winning opener, has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team by the BCCI The 42-year-old left-hander, who played a pivotal role in India's 2011 ODI World Cup victory, was chosen to replace Rahul Dravid. Dravid's tenure concluded with India's triumph in the T20 World Cup in Barbados last month. Gambhir's first assignment will be the tour of Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs starting on July 27.

"The Board would like to thank former Head Coach, Mr Rahul Dravid for his brilliant run with the team. Team India now embarks on a journey under a new coach - Mr Gautam Gambhir," said BCCI President Roger Binny in an elaborate statement. The Cricket Advisory Committee, consisting of Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir for the position. "His appointment as Head Coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. His experience, dedication, and vision for the game make him the ideal candidate to guide our team forward."
Gambhir expressed his excitement and honour at being named head coach in a BCCI statement. "It is an absolute honour to serve my tricolour, my people, my country," he said. He also took the opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his support staff for their exemplary performance with the team. "I am honoured and excited to take on the role of Head Coach for Team India," he added.
He further mentioned that he looks forward to working closely with BCCI officials, including VVS Laxman, and the support staff. "Most importantly," he said, "I look forward to working with the players as we aim for success in upcoming tournaments," Gambhir emphasised that his pride in donning the Indian jersey during his playing days will continue in his new role.
According to an earlier report, there was a delay in naming Gambhir as head coach due to salary negotiations. Media reports suggest that Rahul Dravid was drawing an annual salary of Rs 12 crore. It is anticipated that Gambhir will receive a higher amount than this figure along with several perks.
The annual salary is not the only benefit associated with being the head coach of the Indian cricket team. In 2019, the Board revised its daily allowance policy, entitling the coach to $250 (nearly Rs 21,000) daily while on an away tour. This amount is double what it used to be and is in addition to business class travel, accommodation, and laundry expenses covered by BCCI.
In addition to these financial benefits, Gambhir will also enjoy world-class travel experiences and accommodations while on national duty. These perks are part of an effort by BCCI to ensure that their coaching staff can focus entirely on their roles without worrying about logistical issues.
The Cricket Advisory Committee's unanimous recommendation highlights their confidence in Gambhir's ability to lead Team India effectively. His extensive experience as a player and his dedication make him well-suited for this challenging role.
This appointment marks a significant transition for Indian cricket as they move forward under new leadership. With upcoming tournaments on the horizon, all eyes will be on how Gambhir steers Team India towards continued success.
Team India achieved a great deal by the culmination of Rahul Dravid's tenure. There is hope for what lies ahead under Gautam Gambhir's leadership as he assumes this significant position.
