President Ramnath Kovind who is chosen in the 2017 presidential elections has been an educator by heart ever since his life as a student. He had a love for civic science.
He graduated law from a college in Kanpur.
After graduation Kovind set on to give a shot in the civil services examination. Even though he did not make it in the first two attempts, he cleared Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam in the third try. However, he did not go on to serve in the government as he could secure only an allied service and not a position in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS).

After having got turned away from the IAS posts, Kovind became a lawyer. He was practising law since then. He became a Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and served as a Central Government standing counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.
In 1978, he became an advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court of India. He practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years until 1993. He was also enrolled as an advocate in 1971 with the bar council of Delhi.
As a social service he provided free legal aid to weaker sections of society, women and the poor under the Free Legal Aid Society in New Delhi.
