Kannada, previously also known as Canarese, is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by the people of Karnataka in southwestern India, with minorities in all neighbouring states. Those whose mother tongue it is have a responsibility to learn to read and write it, and those who live in the regions where it is widely spoken have an advantage in learning the native tongue.
