UGC issues guidelines for choice-based transfer system

New Delhi, Nov 13: A day after HRD Minister Smriti Irani informed about the implementation of a 'choice based transfer system' scheme in universities, UGC has issued guidelines for uniform adoption of the system across all campuses from 2015-16 academic year.

The system will ensure seamless mobility of students across higher educational institutions in the country and abroad. The credit earned by a student can be transferred and would be of help to them in the event of their seeking migration from one institution to another, UGC said in a communication to all vice chancellors.

Talking about the scheme, Irani had expressed hope that all Central Universities would adopt them from the coming academic session. A student can take courses of their choice under this system, learn at their pace, undergo additional courses and acquire more than the required credits, and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to learning.

The courses will be three types such as core, elective and foundation. Universities have been asked to introduce a grading system with the adoption of the choice-based transfer system. The UGC recommended a 10-point grading system applied uniformly across the country, with 10-grade points being declared as 'outstanding' and 9-grade points as 'A+'.
