September 30 is celebrated as International Translation Day annually as a tribute to the work of translation professionals.
30 September is the death anniversary of Saint Jerome who is widely regarded as the patron saint of translators.
He translated the Bible from Greek to Latin - the language of the dominant Roman Empire - thus making it accessible and understandable to much of the western world of that era.
History
The idea was first proposed by the International Federation of Translators, FITĀ in 1991 to dedicate a day honoring translation professionals in the world.
UNGA finally passed a resolution on May 24, 2017 recognizing 30 September as the International Translation Day
Role of Translators
Translators connect the world using language as a tool. No peace, prosperity, and development can be achieved in the world without effective communication.
But with so many languages in the world making effective communication complicated, the role of translators become significant to global peace and prosperity.
"A World without Barriers" is the theme of International Translation Day 2022.
Languages are not just means to communicate but also a tool for achieving education, development, and social integration.
What language you can speak determine your fate, identity and sometime nationality.
How it's celebrated?
Several translation contests and poster design competitions are organized to celebrate the day.
