Promote awareness regarding why and how we should protect our rivers, water bodies, from threat such as pollution, dropping water level, encroachment etc.
The day marks the great contribution of Mark Angelo who cleaned up Thompson River
in Canada after a rigorous efforts of 25 years (1980-2005). It was on his insistence that the UN declared in 2005 to celebrate every fourth Sunday of September as the World Rivers Day.
The theme for this year’s World Rivers Day 2022 is ‘The importance of Rivers to Biodiversity’.
And this year, it fell on September 25.
On this occasion, Let's know some interesting facts about Indian Rivers
Most of the rivers in India flow from West to East, emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
Narmada, Tapti and Sabarmati are rare important rivers to flow from East to West in India.
Two major rivers of Rajasthan – Luni and Banas
Have inland water drainage, i.e., they do not empty into the ocean, but get lost in the sand.
Chambal is one of the cleanest rivers in India. People do not bathe in Chambal as its believed that anybody taking bathe in the river gets cursed.

The world’s largest river island - Majuli - is in Brahmaputra River in Assam
