What To Do After BA in English Literature?

English Literature is a beautiful subject that helps the students to take a look at the various texts from across the world cultures, written or translated into the English language. If one has to do a quick recap of why this subject became a best choice of Humanities lover, we have names like Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Shakespeare and at the same time, Maya Angelou, Arundhati Roy, Rushdie, Adichie, Bradbury and much more.

Authors, poets, playwrights, in short writers, have used the language of English and written down their thoughts on politics, gender, culture, behaviorisms, disputes and much more.

Every era has had its own collection of writers. From articles recording the Suffragette movements to, oppression of women in the middle east to the many stories from the India-Pakistan partition days, from the books on Civil Rights movement in America to love poems by Neruda. All stories exist in this parameter of literature.

It is difficult to pinpoint one specific work and say this is the best thing English literature has given us. Because there are so many.

The students who are enthused by such works are students of English Literature who take up this subject as a major in their Bachelor's degree. Many follow their passion for the subject the works, while many take the subject focusing on the academics, and to go ahead with research.

"So, What's the Plan after BA?"

But the usual set of people always look at the students of Literature with a lot of doubt. Their first question when you tell them that you have planned to take up Bachelors in English Literature is, "What profession will it give you?" or "What will you do in life?"

While might have the patience to control their irritation at this point some may not. The general public needs to understand that English Literature has various branches that students can take up after their Bachelors. So here are a few career options that you can look for, and take up so that the next time one of your relatives or friends bother you, you will have a really good answer to come back with!

Editor

An editor is someone who is in charge of what comes out on a publication. This can be a magazine, a newspaper, an online news portal. You will have to take care of the content, not just in terms of the grammar and punctuation, but also you must look into whether the copy is relevant and there aren't any repercussions of publishing the same.

After a BA in English Literature, you can start as a reporter or a content writer, and with experience, you can move up the positions of assistant-editor, sub-editor and so on.

Writer

Now you do not have to get a BA in English Literature to be a writer. But a student of English literature will have to take up texts from various eras and cultures. You will be exposed to various writing styles and other technicalities of writing. If you have had a course in creative writing that will help you furthermore.

As an author, you can work on your idea for a book, a short story, a novella or poems. You will have to submit the complete manuscript to a publication house. After several rounds of analysis and editing, the work will be published.

 

Translators

Many might not know this, but translation is a very important area today. There are various career opportunities provided to a person who is proficient in English and another language.

Translation as a whole is a vast area in English literature. Many publication houses will hire you to translate texts from regional or foreign languages to English and vice versa. Translation of academic texts, subtitles in movies and other visual media is also an option.

An English Teacher

You might think that teaching English will not be interesting. Well, you are wrong. You always have the option of teaching the language, in higher classes, colleges, and universities where you won't be just narrating the story but also diving into the depths of the text.

You can also be a teacher of English in a foreign country. There are many opportunities like this, in countries where they pay a really good amount for teaching English to students who do not have English as their first language.

Mass Communication

After your BA in English, you can definitely take up the media world if you are good at what you do. You can go for production of shows, which can be on Radio, Television, Streaming devices or even a Youtube channel. You can also become communications officer if you take up PR.

Media and communication is a vast area, where jobs are opening up according to the need of the hour. A strong control over language will only help you mold your career.
