This course is available to engineers, architects, lawyers and management graduates. However, one does not necessarily need to have a professional degree to be eligible to pursue this course. A basic graduation degree with honors in physics, geography or social sciences are eligible to take up post-graduation degree in this field.

Colleges like Tata Institute of Social Sciences offer MA and MSc programmes in Habitat Policy and Practice. The same is also offered by TERI University, New Delhi. At the global level, the University of Oxford, UK is one of the best institutes to be offering this course. Diploma in this field is also available as a distance education program offered by IGNOU and a few other universities.
