Can An Average Student Crack CAT?

Written By: Sashikanth Sai

It is not a good idea to say yes or no without providing substantial information to the title. We all know that the Common Admission Test (CAT), one of the popular entrance examinations in India, is conducted for admission to IIMs and top B-schools.

Undeniably, admission to IIMs or B-schools in India will not be a cakewalk for aspirants because many institutes have the world reputation for their academics and have to maintain their positions in the World University Rankings.

As the CAT exam is conducted for entrance into top institutes in India, obviously, the best can only avail education at the institutes. Of course, the best can only knock the doors of the premier institutes, but how can we decide who are the best? Don't say academic grades, because taking the entrance examination is entirely different from the board exams.

To be honest with you, anyone can crack any entrance examination in India, be it the average or top students. This is even applied to CAT; however, they should motivate themselves with many facts.

What Is The Myth?

There is a rumour amongst CAT aspirants that engineering graduates have an edge compared to others. This is mainly because over sixty percent of students selected to the institutes are from an engineering background. Honestly, this should not be considered because there are candidates from non-engineering courses also.

Know The Difference!

Any candidate can earn a full score in the entrance exam if there is no time restriction. The major difference between qualified and non-qualified candidates in the exam is processing the information in a given time. This is the area where an average person should improve.

Confidence Is The Key

More than fifty percent of the students just give the exam an attempt, like they would a regular exam. This is due to lack of confidence from lack of preparation. This draws the line between top and average students.

Who Are Your Competitors?

An aspirant should know about the actual competitors before starting to prepare for the exam. When it comes to CAT, only fifty to sixty thousand candidates are real aspirants though lakhs apply for the exam. If you need a seat in an IIM, you should be amongst the top ten thousand.

What You Need To Do?

We have discussed the above points to make sure that everyone is good enough to crack the CAT examination. However, it can be achieved only if you are good at everything. Here are some of the preparation tips to crack the exam.

  • Keep your concepts clear and make a note of them.
  • Identify your strengths and put your best foot forward to minimise your weaknesses.
  • Avoid silly mistakes during your preparations and the exam.
  • Practise is always a key for cracking the exam.
  • One should enhance their reading skills to attempt the question paper completely.

If you assume that you're an average students, it means you're not yet exposed to the tough areas of concepts. There is nothing else. The CAT 2018 will be held some time in November and you still have more than six months to prepare. Put in your efforts and always motivate yourself, telling yourself you're no lesser to anyone.
