Interested to know where most of the international students are studying in the United States? The data published by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) will help in this regard. The SEVP, which manages schools, nonimmigrant students in the F and M visa classifications and their dependents on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has published the data regarding international students studying in the US during 2017.

The data prepared by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) reveals that over 15 lakh international students are studying in the USA. China topped the list with 4.81 lakh international students. However, India takes the second most contributed nation position with a total of 2,49,763 students.

Number Of Indian Students In The USA

Out of 1.5 million international students studying in the US, China and India together account for close to half of the foreign students in the USA. After China and India, South Korea takes the third place with a total of 95,701 students. It is followed by Saudi Arabia and Japan with 72,358 and 41,862, respectively. The other countries in the top 10 include Canada, Vietnam, Brazil, Taiwan and Mexico.

The SEVP divided the data into three categories, namely, school data, international student data, and employer data. The data of the international students include:

  • "Countries of citizenship by the total number of active students, "
  • "Countries of citizenship by number of active students with STEM OPT authorization"
  • "Number of active students with Curricular Practical Training (CPT); OPT; or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) OPT Authorization"
  • "Top 5 countries of citizenship for secondary F-1 high school students"

Out of the 89,839 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training (OPT) foreign students, over fifty thousand students were from India. While coming to international students studying at the higher secondary level, China tops with 44,573 students. According to the data published by SEVP, most of the Indian students prefer to visit the United States to pursue higher education.
