How To Get A Perfect Score In The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)?

Are you planning to pursue your higher studies in engineering, business or law? Attaining a good score in the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) should be your first priority because it is accepted by thousands of institutes across the world. This standardised test, which is owned and administrated by Educational Testing Service (ETS), is an admission requirement to most of the top universities in the world that are listed in the World University Rankings.
The prospective students have to understand that the business schools have also started accepting the GRE scores besides Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), which is a standardised test for an admission to management courses.
To pursue higher studies abroad, specifically in the student countries such as the USA and the UK, candidates should have a good GRE score. Attaining a good score is not a cakewalk for candidates as GRE is one amongst the toughest entrance examinations. The preparation tips mentioned below will help the aspirants get a perfect score.
GRE Exam Pattern
ETS has prepared the GRE General Test pattern to test the candidates on their verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills. These are not related to any specific field of study but play a significant role over a period of time that is important at every stage of life.
The GRE test is conducted both online and offline. However, most of the institutes give preference to the computer-based examination. The total duration of the test is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are six sections with a 10-minute break following the third section. Here is the test pattern for the computer-based GRE General Test.

GRE Verbal Reasoning
The test-takers should analyse and draw a conclusion based on the given data. The candidates will be tested on the author's perspective and intent. One should understand the meaning of words, sentences and the entire texts. It also tests the candidates on relationships between words and concepts. Here are some tips to crack the exam.
- Improving your vocabulary is the first and foremost tip and this should be a regular activity while preparing for the exam.
- One should also practise the usage of the words which will improve one's vocabulary.
- The reading comprehension is a big part of the GRE paper. One should practise reading comprehensions a lot because this is a scoring section.
- It is advised to practise at least two to three reading comprehensions to get a decent score in GRE.
- Be familiar with the basic rules of grammar because marks will be deducted for this as well.
GRE Quantitative Reasoning
The candidates will be tested on their basic mathematical skills such as arithmetic algebra and geometry. One has to solve the problems by using the mathematical models. Here are some tips to prepare for the quantitative reasoning section in GRE.
- As we stated above, many questions will be on elementary mathematics. Hence, never ignore topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
- There will be many indirect questions in quantitative reasoning and one should be well versed with them.
- Aspirants are also advised to study the basic concepts in this section because there will be more tricky questions.
- Finding a shortcut to solve the problems will help the candidates to save time for other sections.
GRE Analytical Writing
This section tests the candidates on their critical thinking ability and analytical writing skills. It consists of two tasks, namely, ''Analyze an Issue'' and "Analyze an Argument." Here are the tips for this section.
- In the analytical writing, reading is the key to success. One should meticulously read and understand the task.
- Try to form all the opinions and start analysing the task from every point of view.
- While writing, aspirants should give importance not only to the argument but also to the grammar.
- It is advised to use the current topics while preparing an answer or argument.
