The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced the third edition of its Asha Scholarship Programme, aimed at providing financial assistance to 10,000 deserving students from underprivileged backgrounds across India. The scholarship seeks to empower young minds from Class 6 through postgraduate levels, offering much-needed support for their educational journey. Who Can Apply?

The Asha Scholarship is open to students across various educational levels:

  • Class 6 to 12: Scholarships of up to Rs 15,000 per year.
  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate students: Financial aid of up to Rs 20 lakh per year.
  • Students enrolled in IITs and IIMs are eligible for specific categories, ensuring financial support for those studying at India's top institutes.
  • Additionally, the 'Study Abroad' category is available for SC/ST students pursuing Masters or higher degrees at prestigious global institutions.

Course-Specific Scholarships and Study Abroad Opportunities

SBI has tailored its Asha Scholarship categories to suit students at various stages of their academic journey. From school students to those pursuing higher education at IITs, IIMs, and even prestigious international universities, the programme aims to alleviate financial burdens and provide the resources necessary for educational success.

  • Last report card or academic records
  • Government-issued identification (Aadhar, passport)
  • Proof of student status
  • Bank account details
  • Passport-sized photograph

Selection Process

The selection process involves multiple steps:

  • Initial Screening: Applications are reviewed for eligibility based on academic performance and financial need.
  • Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates must provide income certificates, academic records, and other supporting documents for verification.
  • Personal Interview: Final candidates will participate in an interview to discuss their educational goals, achievements, and financial situation.

SBI's commitment to education is further demonstrated by its Merit-Cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship, available to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the GEN/GEN-EWS/OBC categories. This scholarship provides Rs 1,000 per month and covers 25% of class strength. SC/ST students are eligible for a separate scholarship with no cap on the number of awards, and they receive a monthly stipend of Rs 250, alongside refunds for License Fees and Dining Charges.

Since the programme's launch in 2022, the Asha Scholarship has awarded Rs 3.91 crore to 3,198 students, making education accessible for those from economically weaker sections. "The Asha Scholarship Programme reflects SBI's mission to go beyond banking and serve the community," said SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty. By supporting students financially, SBI aims to ensure that talented individuals from underserved backgrounds can access quality education and contribute to the nation's future.
