Quality Agricultural Education at JIS University: Building Future-Ready Agriculture Professionals

Said that the innovative and modern agricultural education system of the Faculty of Agriculture, JIS University plays an important role in opening new horizons for agricultural professionals.
In the present era, agriculture is not limited to only production of food only, it is an important area in modern technology, innovation and research. The Faculty of Agriculture of JIS University, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, has emerged as a centre of excellence and is working tirelessly to make skilled agriculturists and researchers as par with this changing agricultural scenario.
The Faculty of Agriculture has a modern and pleasant student-friendly academic environment, well-equipped classrooms, modern laboratories and skilled teaching staff etc. Following the guidelines of the 6th Dean's Committee of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the course-curriculum has been designed which helps students to acquire quality agricultural education.
Apart from being limited to classroom learning, Faculty of Agriculture also provides special importance to practical exposure to students. The university has regular hands-on practical training sessions on cultivation of various crops (vegetables, fruits etc.) on its own cultivable land. Students also gain experience in soil and water analysis, plant breeding, pest and disease management etc.
To bridge the gap between the classroom learning and field realities, educational visits are being organized to various agricultural farms, agricultural institutes, agro-industries and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to familiarise students with the present agricultural scenarios. Through these programs, students get the opportunity to gain practical experience in modern technology in agriculture, innovative farming methods and agripreneurship development.
Students undertake various experimental activities related to soil science, agricultural chemistry, plant pathology, agricultural microbiology, plant breeding and biotechnology in the Faculty's well-equipped laboratories. These platforms help them to develop analytical abilities, scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.
Beyond the academic curriculum, the Faculty of Agriculture regularly conducts various seminars, workshops, expert lectures, agricultural exhibitions and training programs for the overall development of students. These platforms help the students to get the opportunity for exchanging views with renowned scientists, researchers and agricultural experts of the country and are informed about the recent developments in agriculture.
Presently, the employment prospects in the agricultural sector are increasing day by day. There is a bright future for agricultural students in agricultural research, agricultural extension, agri-business sector, horticulture, seed industry, food processing as well as creating employment through developing their own enterprise as agripreneurs. The Faculty is committed to develop students to meet these emerging opportunities.
