IIT Madras is offering a free online course on Quantum Computing on the NPTEL platform. The four-week course, titled "Introduction to Quantum Computing: Quantum Algorithms and Qiskit," is being offered in collaboration with IBM Research and IBM Systems. IIT Madras recently established a partnership with IBM for quantum computing education and research. The course is open to students, researchers, and faculty from the departments of computer science and physics, mathematics, and chemistry.
Dr. Prabha Mandayam, an assistant professor at IIT Madras with a Ph.D. in quantum computing, Dr. Anupama Ray, an advisory research scientist, IBM Quantum Ambassador, and Qiskit Advocate, IBM Research with a Ph.D. in deep learning, and Dr. Sheshashayee Raghunathan, a senior engineer at IBM Quantum Ambassador and Qiskit Advocate with a Ph.D. in quantum computing, will lead the course.
What Will The IIT Madras And IBM Quantum Computing Course Cover?
The participants will be introduced to Quantum Computation, beginning with fundamental concepts like superposition and entanglement and on to a discussion of the quantum circuit model of computation and basic quantum algorithms that demonstrate the capability of computing with quantum bits. Participants will also gain knowledge of the concept of quantum error correction, which is used to reduce the impacts of noise in today's quantum devices. Below are some of the course topics that will be covered:
- Introduction and IBM Quantum Perspective, Q Mission in India: Invited Talk, Quantum Computing Applications, and Quantum Computing Basics.
- Quantum Algorithms-I (Oracles, Deustch Jozsa), Quantum Algorithms-II (Grover's Algorithm with Hands-on).
- IBM Quantum Composer and Quantum Lab using Qiskit.
- Quantum Error Correction: Invited Talk, NISQ era Quantum Algorithms (VQE/QAOA and Industrial Applications).
There will also be a thorough hands-on session for each idea taught using Qiskit, a pythonic programming language, and the IBM Circuit Composer.
