Mine Closure Planning has now become mandatory for all mines in India. Mining activities are planned to minimise the long lasting impacts on landscape, ecology and on the mindset of local inhabitants since left unmanaged, these effects can be detrimental for general welfare. Carrying out of present production, environmental and maintenance oriented activities in any mining site now require careful consideration for post closure impacts and mine site restoration. Closing of mining operation involves numerous issues like reclamation and environmental protection, community issues, socio‐economic consideration, planning for alternate use of available facilities, cost estimation and asset disposal. Any mining venture must have adequate closure plan, aimed at rehabilitation of disturbed area, which should be acceptable to local community as well as regulatory authority. Development of mine closure plans requires understanding a number of interrelated concepts. Without adequate environmental management system, cost effective mine closure or post‐closure development in mine site is impossible. The post mining mine sites have a direct impact on the neighboring community. Therefore, mine site restoration initiative must be based on integration of CSR and EMP.
