University of Pennsylvania and coursera offers an online course on creation of artifacts. The course helps the students combine fundamental concepts with hands-on design challenges to become a better designer.

About the course:
This is a course aimed at making you a better designer. The course marries theory and practice, as both are valuable in improving design performance. Lectures and readings will lay out the fundamental concepts that underpin design as a human activity.
Weekly design challenges test your ability to apply those ideas to solve real problems. The course is deliberately broad - spanning all domains of design, including architecture, graphics, services, apparel, engineered goods, and products.

  • Week 2: User Needs
  • Week 3: Decomposition of User Needs
  • Week 4: Concept Selection
  • Week 5: Concept Testing
  • Week 6: Aesthetics in Design
  • Week 7: Brands
  • Week 8: Introduction to Supply Chain and Costing

Duration: 8 weeks of study

Timings: 5 to 10 hours of work / week.
