By

The West Bengal Assembly has passed the Bankura University Bill, 2013, paving the way for setting up a new university aimed at reducing the burden of Burdwan University.

The bill was passed amidst a boycott of discussion by the opposition Congress and the Left Front who agitated outside the Assembly on separate issues.

Bankura University Bill 2013 passed

While the Congress agitated for a debate on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's criticism of the Centre, the Left Front demanded a CBI inquiry into the Saradha chit fund scandal.

The new university will reduce the burden of Burdwan University by taking Bankura under its jurisdiction, thereby helping greater penetration of higher education among the backward classes of the district.

An amount of Rs 15 crore would be spent on setting up infrastructure for the new university and another Rs 5 crore for recurring annual expenditure.
