NSUI's DUSU Candidate Vijay Shankar Meena to Launch 'Campus Bachao Yatra' on September 22

Vijay Shankar Meena, who contested the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) presidential election 2026-27 as the NSUI candidate, has announced plans for a 'Campus Bachao Yatra' from September 22. The proposed campaign is focused on issues concerning student accommodation, education, safety and welfare at Delhi University.

Vijay Shankar Meena to Launch Campus Bachao Yatra

The announcement comes after the DUSU election held on September 18. Meena's campaign during the election had highlighted student concerns including hostel shortages, scholarships and other campus facilities. The NSUI manifesto, titled "Accountable DU | Accountable DUSU," also included proposals related to accommodation, Metro concessions, libraries, canteens, menstrual leave, mental-health support and career opportunities.

Campus Bachao Yatra: Issues Raised by Meena

The proposed yatra is intended to take the issues raised during the election campaign directly to students across Delhi University campuses. According to the announcement, the campaign will focus on seeking action from the university administration and the Delhi government on matters affecting students.

Among the issues being highlighted is student accommodation. Hostel availability has been a prominent subject during the 2026 DUSU election campaign, with different student organisations raising concerns about safe and affordable housing for students.

Meena Questions 10,000-Bed Hostel Plan

A key issue highlighted by Meena is the Delhi government's recently announced plan to develop hostel facilities for 10,000 students. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the initiative in September, saying the government was working on a policy and had begun identifying locations for the proposed accommodation. The proposed facilities are intended for students studying in colleges and universities across Delhi.

Meena has sought more information about the implementation of the proposal, including the proposed locations, construction timeline and when students could begin using the facilities.

NSUI Manifesto and Student Welfare Issues

The accommodation issue formed part of a wider set of demands in the NSUI's election manifesto. The document called for affordable housing, student Metro concession passes, a five-day academic week, 24×7 libraries and subsidised canteens. It also referred to menstrual leave, mental-health support, scholarships, internships, career assistance, Wi-Fi and other campus facilities.

The manifesto's focus reflects several issues that featured in the wider DUSU election debate, particularly student housing and campus safety following the Satya Niketan accommodation collapse earlier in September.

What Is the Campus Bachao Yatra?

The 'Campus Bachao Yatra' has been described as a student outreach campaign through which Meena intends to take these concerns to university campuses and students. The programme is expected to focus on collecting student concerns and raising them with the relevant authorities.

Since the proposed yatra is scheduled for September 22, further details regarding its route, participating students and programme schedule may be announced separately.

DUSU Election 2026 Context

Meena was one of the candidates in the 2026 DUSU presidential contest. The election featured candidates from major student organisations as well as independents, with student accommodation, education, safety and welfare among the prominent campaign issues.

The DUSU election results were subsequently declared after counting on September 19, with Yash Dabas winning the presidency. Meena finished as the runner-up in the presidential contest.

The proposed Campus Bachao Yatra therefore comes after the election and represents a continued student-issue campaign by Meena. Its focus, as described in the announcement, will remain on accommodation, education, safety, welfare and implementation of student-related measures.
