No Indian varsity in top 300 of US News Rankings


The inaugural of the world University ranking by US education analysis and ranking website US News also reveals that no Indian varsity can match up to the top 300 in the world.

As per the rankings, Delhi university placed in the 316th position, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore placed in the 323rd position, IIT Bombay placed in the 405th position and IIT Kharagpur in the 484th position.

The Delhi University and IISc placed in the 45th and 46th positions respectively, in the top 50 varsities in Asia.

Harvard University has ranked in the 1st position in US News global university rankings 2014, and it is followed by MIT, University of California, Berkeley and Staford University.

From UK, Oxford University ranked in the 5th position, followed by Cambridge University, California Institute of Technology, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Chicago and Columbia University.

US News has listed out the top 500 institutions based on 10 indicators that measure their academic research performance and global and regional reputations.

The institutions were then ranked based on 10 indicators that included global and regional research reputation, publications, normalised citation impact, total citations, number and percentage of highly cited papers, international collaboration, number of Ph.Ds awarded and number of Ph.Ds awarded per academic staff member.

In the 48th meeting between HRD Minister and IIT Council at IIT Madras, it has been decided that universities have to frame their ranking system for the Indian institutions.
