The UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam is one of the most competitive stages of the selection process, and understanding the timing, schedule, guidelines, and session rules is essential for every aspirant. The exam is conducted in two sessions on the same day-General Studies Paper-I (GS-I) and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT). The UPSC Prelims includes two compulsory papers conducted on a single day. Strict rules apply regarding entry timing, permitted items, OMR usage, and conduct inside the exam hall.

The UPSC Prelims Exam Timing & Session Rules play a decisive role in the success of aspirants as even a minor mistake can lead to disqualification. The exam is conducted in two separate shifts:

• Morning Session - GS Paper-I (9:30 AM to 11:30 AM)
• Afternoon Session - CSAT Paper-II (2:30 PM to 4:30 PM)

Candidates must report well before the exam begins. UPSC strictly closes the exam hall gates 10 minutes before the start of the examination. Late entry is not allowed under any circumstances, even by a few seconds. Aspirants must carry their admit card, a valid photo ID, and essential stationery like a black ball-point pen. Only transparent water bottles are permitted.

Inside the hall, candidates are required to fill OMR sheets carefully, as incorrect bubbling or failure to darken the circles properly may lead to misinterpretation by the scanner. In GS Paper-I, every wrong answer attracts negative marking (1/3rd penalty), while CSAT is qualifying in nature, requiring a minimum of 33% marks to score.

Electronic gadgets, smartwatches, calculators, or any digital devices are strictly prohibited. Even metallic items or accessories may need to be removed while undergoing frisking. UPSC also prohibits rough work on question papers that damages the barcode area.

Candidates must maintain silence and follow the invigilator's instructions throughout the session. Leaving the hall before the examination ends is not allowed. UPSC follows the principle of zero tolerance for malpractice, and any suspicious behaviour may result in immediate cancellation of candidature.

The gap between the two sessions allows aspirants enough time to refresh and prepare mentally for the CSAT paper.
