What Is the IES Examination?

The Indian Economic Service (IES) exam is conducted annually by UPSC to recruit specialists in economics who contribute to economic policy formulation and analysis for the Government of India.

Qualified candidates serve in departments such as Finance, Commerce, Agriculture, and NITI Aayog, among others.

This year, the IES exam is being conducted along with the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exam, and a total of 44 vacancies have been notified by UPSC for both services combined.

Eligibility Criteria (Basic)

To be eligible for the IES 2026 exam, candidates must meet the following:

Educational Qualification: A postgraduate degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics from a recognised university.

Age Limit: Minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years as on 1 August 2026 (age relaxations apply for reserved categories as per UPSC rules).

Candidates should read the official notification carefully to confirm all eligibility requirements.

How to Apply for UPSC IES 2026

Follow these steps to submit your application:

  • Visit upsconline.nic.in.
  • Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR), if not already done.
  • Fill in personal and educational details in the application form.
  • Upload scanned copies of your photo, signature, and other documents.
  • Pay the application fee (if applicable) and submit.
  • Download the confirmation page for future reference.

Late submissions and incomplete applications will not be accepted after the March 3 deadline.
