The University of Southampton has made history by becoming the first UK university to receive approval from the Indian government to establish a full-fledged campus in India. This landmark move is a significant development in the Indian education sector, in line with the University Grants Commission's (UGC) efforts to attract the top 500 foreign universities to set up campuses in the country.

The official approval came in the form of a Letter of Intent (LoI) presented to the University of Southampton, marking the beginning of this exciting collaboration. The ceremony was attended by India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, who highlighted the importance of this initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Dr. Jaishankar stated, "This reflects both the vision of elevating our educational standards to the highest global levels and delivering on the education pillar of India-UK cooperation."
Focus on Education and Research
The University of Southampton, ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide, plans to establish its new campus in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). This campus will emphasize education, research, knowledge exchange, and enterprise activities, blending Southampton's renowned expertise with India's growing potential as a global education hub.
Mark E. Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, underscored the importance of this initiative: "In the 21st century, no university can be truly global without engaging with India. We intend to establish a campus that delivers social value and economic impact to India and the university by bringing together Southampton's world-class activities in education, research, knowledge exchange, and enterprise with all the talent of the rising global superpower that is India."
Enhancing Academic Collaboration
Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President of International and Engagement, stressed the role this campus will play in fostering academic collaboration and enriching the Indian higher education landscape. "University of Southampton Delhi NCR will be the first comprehensive international campus in India. It will foster academic collaboration and bring an international dimension to the Indian higher education system, opening up opportunities to study for a top 100 degree in-country," he said.
This collaboration is a major step toward realizing the NEP 2020's vision of 'internationalisation at home.' The Indian Education Minister praised the growing interest of globally renowned higher education institutions in partnering with Indian institutions, contributing to India's future as a global education and talent hub.
Strengthening Global Cooperation
Dr. Jaishankar expressed confidence that such initiatives will better prepare Indian youth for global challenges and strengthen international cooperation. He noted that this endeavor reflects India's commitment to raising educational standards to global levels and enhancing India-UK cooperation.
Until now, only Australian universities-Deakin University and the University of Wollongong-have established campuses in India, located in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). Malaysia's Lincoln University College was the first foreign university to register through the UGC's dedicated portal to set up a campus in India.
The new campus is expected to play a crucial role in supporting India's transformative agenda by tapping into the country's young talent. Mark E. Smith added that this initiative aims to deliver social value and economic impact by merging Southampton's expertise with India's potential as a rising global superpower. This collaboration between India and the UK marks a new chapter in international educational partnerships, underscoring India's ambition to become a global education hub while offering students access to world-class learning right in their own country.
