University of Calicut gives nod to open 35 new self-financing colleges

The University of Calicut has decided to open new 35 self-financing colleges in Kerala.

The University syndicate members have given a green signal to start new colleges. Under it, 12 professional colleges have also opened. Five new colleges will come up in Malabar district.

Around 7,000 new seats will come up for students from these colleges. The varsity sanctioned a 20% increase in seats during the 2014-15 academic year.

Syndicate members also decided to increase examination fees from the next academic year.

According to the Finance Officer of the varsity, in 2013, University had spent Rs 36 crore for the university examinations. It received only Rs 25 crore as fees from students.

The syndicate has decided to start three new teaching departments for Sociology, Urdu and law on the campus.

The University also decided to do away with the false numbering of answer sheets during evaluation, amid opposition by a section of the syndicate which said that the decision would affect the confidentiality of the examination process.
