Two Human Metapneumovirus Infections (HMPV) cases confirmed in Karnataka

In Karnataka, two instances of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections were identified, as announced by the Union health ministry. This discovery came about through the established practices of monitoring for various respiratory viruses. Notably, both patients, a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy, had been treated for bronchopneumonia at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. The girl has since been discharged, while the boy is on the mend. These cases are significant as neither child had traveled abroad, indicating local transmission of HMPV.

The Union health ministry has highlighted that Human Metapneumovirus, a pathogen with a global presence, including in India, is known to cause respiratory illnesses. This revelation comes after the detection of the virus in two young patients without any history of international travel. The health authorities have reassured the public that there has been no unusual increase in illnesses resembling influenza or severe respiratory conditions. They have confirmed continuous monitoring and assessment of respiratory diseases through a network that includes the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

The ICMR, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), is vigilant in tracking the prevalence of HMPV and other respiratory viruses throughout the year. The WHO's regular updates, especially concerning the situation in China, play a crucial role in guiding India's preparedness and response strategies. The ministry emphasized that India has demonstrated its capacity to effectively manage an escalation in respiratory illnesses, underlined by a recent nationwide preparedness drill. This exercise verified the country's readiness and ability to implement public health interventions swiftly when necessary.
