Town of Mangalagiri approved to set up new AIIMS

Mangalagiri has been approved by the central government as the site to set up the new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP).

A report on the project will be submitted to the center shortly by a 2 member committee, to work on the matter.

As per the Centre's guidelines, the minimum requirement to set up an AIIMS is of 200 acres of land. However, the Union Health Ministry has given its green signal to the site at Mangalagiri, although it is of around 193 acres. The work on the ambitious project is expected to start soon.

The new AIIMS in AP will be set up on the TB sanatorium land. The estimated cost of the construction of the hospital is around Rs 1,500 crore. Altogether Rs 125 crore has already been allotted by the center for initial work on the project. The entire state is expected to benefit from the 500-bed super-specialty hospital.
