At the heart of a global initiative to empower the underprivileged youth with essential communication skills, Teach For Speech (TFS) stands out with its commitment to enriching the lives of children through public speaking and leadership training. This youth-led non-profit organization boasts over 12 chapters worldwide, engaging more than 500 individuals in its noble cause. At the forefront of its Bangalore chapter, Srihita, an International Baccalaureate student from Canadian International School, Bangalore, dedicates her efforts to guide over 20 members in driving this impactful mission forward.

To bridge the gap in communication skills among students, Srihita has orchestrated a series of workshops at venues like Venkatala Government School and Jagruthi Trust in Bangalore. These sessions, filled with storytelling, leadership exercises, and interactive games, aim to bolster the students' confidence and enhance their ability to express themselves effectively. Recognizing the importance of continuous learning, Srihita integrates follow-up sessions and collaborates with her school's English Literacy Club to provide a comprehensive learning experience. The workshops, conducted in both English and Kannada, ensure that students, primarily Kannada speakers, grasp the basics of the English language through simplified communication.
Srihita's commitment to this cause stems from a personal ambition to promote public speaking skills among the youth. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, "I've always wanted to be involved in advocating for public speaking skills, so I used that passion to open up a community service project for my IB diploma. After documenting the results of the workshop, I reflect on how I could've made things go better, so that the next time we conduct a workshop, the same faults won't happen again. For example, the first time we visited Venkatala, it was difficult to communicate with them because our understanding of their English proficiency was inaccurate. So, the next time we went there, we focused more on English speaking along with the foundation of public speaking skills. I also reflect on how I, as a person, could be better at executing these workshops or how I and my team and I could be better at planning and organising these workshops." This iterative approach ensures that each workshop is more effective than the last, paving the way for meaningful progress in the students' communication skills.
The success of these initiatives is echoed by Ms. Shweta Sastri, Managing Director of Canadian International School, Bangalore, who remarks, "To see our own core values of inspiration, caring and respect on display through this initiative is a testament to our vision of empowering our learners to impact a remarkable future. We are so proud of this initiative to bring future-ready skills to students who wouldn't necessarily have the access to public speaking education otherwise." This endorsement highlights the alignment of TFS's goals with the school's mission to prepare students for a bright future.
TFS's efforts have notably impacted elementary school students from grades 2 to 5, a critical period for developing key learning skills. Srihita notes, "Speaking capabilities are the gateway for youth to speak up about their educational and career aspirations in the world around them. Without people speaking up, it slows down social change and an individual's ability to advocate for themselves and others. These capabilities allow the youth to create a confident, articulate and influential voice for the future and for themselves. The students felt more confident in their actions after the workshop and they had loads of fun too." This statement underscores the broader significance of public speaking skills in fostering self-confidence and enabling social advocacy among the youth.
Looking to the future, Srihita is determined to expand TFS Bangalore's reach through specialized workshops and ongoing support. Her vision is to refine and further develop the communication skills of underprivileged students, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed. This commitment to nurturing future leaders through effective communication and leadership training exemplifies the transformative power of dedicated youth-led initiatives in making a lasting impact on society.
