Tamil Nadu to Add 660 BSc Nursing Seats With 7 New Government Nursing Colleges

The Tamil Nadu government has approved the establishment of seven new government nursing colleges, creating 660 additional B.Sc Nursing seats annually. The move is aimed at expanding undergraduate nursing education and increasing access to government-run nursing programmes in the state.

Of the seven colleges, six will be established with an annual intake of 100 students each, adding 600 seats. These colleges will come up at government medical colleges in Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tirunelveli. A seventh nursing college with 60 seats will be established at Coimbatore Government Medical College and ESI Hospital.

The six colleges in the listed districts will each admit 100 students to the B.Sc Nursing programme every year. The Coimbatore college will have an intake of 60 students.

The six colleges covered by the September 16 government order will account for 600 seats, while the additional Coimbatore institution will contribute another 60 seats.

Tamil Nadu Nursing College Project Cost

The government order permits the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University to establish the six colleges at an estimated expenditure of around ₹270.26 crore, or approximately ₹45.04 crore per college. The expenditure will be met from the university's own funds.

The new colleges are expected to initially use the existing infrastructure of the respective government medical colleges. The proposed B.Sc Nursing intake for 2026-27 will be subject to the required statutory approvals and affiliations.
