M K Stalin Requests PM Modi To Increase Scholarship Income Threshold For SC, ST, And OBC Students

In an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has called for a significant uplift in the annual family income threshold for scholarships available to students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). He advocates for the limit to be elevated from the current Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh This move, according to Stalin, is crucial and thoroughly warranted to bridge the educational opportunities gap for students from these communities.

Highlighting the disparity in higher education enrolment rates among different communities, Stalin pointed out that students from SC, ST, and certain OBC backgrounds are significantly underrepresented in higher education institutions. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for these groups is considerably lower than that of their counterparts from other communities. This gap underscores the importance of making higher education more accessible to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, thereby enhancing their representation in these institutions.

"In our view, increasing the annual income ceiling for post-matric and pre-matric from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh on par with that of the economically weaker sections is not only essential but also fully justified and warranted," stated Stalin in his communication to the Prime Minister. This statement emphasizes the necessity of aligning the scholarship income ceiling for SC, ST, and OBC students with that of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), which currently stands at Rs 8 lakh.

Further supporting his request, the Chief Minister referred to the Centre's recent adjustments in income ceilings for various educational schemes. Notably, the government has revised the income criteria for the National Overseas Scholarship and the Top-Class Education Scheme for SC and ST students to Rs 8 lakh. This adjustment has already started to benefit many students from underprivileged backgrounds by making higher education more accessible to them.
