The Supreme Court has dismissed a request to delay the NEET-PG 2024 exam scheduled for August 11. The bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized that the futures of 2 lakh students could not be jeopardized for the sake of five petitioners.

The NEET-PG exam, initially set for June 23, was postponed due to alleged irregularities in other competitive exams. The petitioners contended that the new date of August 11 posed significant logistical challenges, particularly regarding the late allocation of test cities on July 31. This short notice forced many candidates to make last-minute travel arrangements, leading to high airfare costs and limited train ticket availability.
The court highlighted the need to maintain the scheduled exam date to avoid disrupting the careers of a large number of students. "We cannot put the careers of 2 lakh students in jeopardy at the behest of five students," the bench remarked. This decision underscores the importance of adhering to established timelines for critical exams.
One of the primary issues raised in the plea was the difficulty candidates faced in reaching their assigned test centres. The allocation of test cities on July 31, with specific centres to be announced on August 8, left little time for candidates to plan their travel. This short notice period exacerbated the logistical challenges and financial burdens for many.
The allocation of test centres was intended to curb cheating and other malpractices. However, the short notice has inadvertently caused significant logistical issues for some candidates. The Supreme Court's decision reflects a balance between maintaining the integrity of the exam and addressing candidate concerns.
