Stay back, serve India: C.N.R Rao urges IITians

Kharagpur, July 28: Eminent scientist C.N.R. Rao Saturday here urged IITians to stay back in India and serve the nation as they are "well-suited" for it.

 

"India will benefit, if IIT students prefer to stay and work in India. All my achievements and works, even while teaching abroad, was done for India. IIT students are very well suited to serve this nation as the courses are broad based. I hope all of you are successful in your endeavours as that will result in a successful India," the Bharat Ratna awardee said at IIT-Kharagpur's 60th convocation.

Rao, a former professor at the institute, also emphasised the need for students to be updated with evolving science and technology.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji was conferred an honorary doctorate by the IIT, Kharagpur, Saturday at its 60th convocation. The Indian business tycoon, who celebrated his 70th birthday two days back, was handed the Doctor of Science degree by Bharat Ratna awardee scientist C.N.R. Rao.

The citation said Premji was selected "for being one of the pioneers of entrepreneurship in modern India through the establishment of Wipro, an organisation deeply committed to values".

Indian Space Research Organisation chairman K. Radhakrishnan, statistician C.R. Rao, founder and first CEO of Tata Consultancy Services Faqir Chand Kohli, were also among those who received the honorary award.
