Somaiya Innovation & Impact Festival 2025 Celebrates Community Engagement And Innovation

The Somaiya Innovation & Impact Festival (SIIF) 2025, hosted by Somaiya Vidyavihar University, recently wrapped up, marking another successful edition of this multidisciplinary event. Celebrated on a sprawling 60+ acre campus dedicated to zero waste, the festival brought together a diverse group of 109 innovators, engaging over 5,000 students, alongside more than 50 investors and industry changemakers. The event, organized by riidl Somaiya Vidyavihar and the Somaiya School of Design, with notable support from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, and the Maharashtra State Innovation Society, showcased a vibrant array of innovation, sustainability, and community impact.

The festival stood out for its inclusive theme "Empowering Communities through Conversations, Collaborations, and Creativity," which effectively amalgamated Maker Mela, Darwin, and Nazariya into a unified celebration. This platform facilitated discussions, startup showcases, and networking opportunities, bringing together thought leaders, startup founders, and policymakers. Keynote speakers like Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani, Shantanu Deshpande, and Prof. Ramesh Raskar shared valuable insights from their experiences, inspiring a new wave of innovation among attendees.

The opening ceremony captivated attendees with a series of performances, highlighted by a stunning act from Nitish Bharti, a sand artist renowned for his appearances on talent shows. His art beautifully reflected the spirit of the SIIF community, setting a tone of creativity and storytelling for the festival. This year's SIIF celebrated innovation across various domains, including healthcare, sustainable fashion, XR technology, and social impact. Awards were presented to Helo Health for its innovative primary healthcare testing kit and Kubra Technologies for its UAV solutions.

Driving Innovation and Sustainability

A significant highlight was the presentation of the Conscious Creators Community Manifesto by Amrita Somaiya, which emphasized sustainable, ethical, and inclusive practices in fashion and lifestyle. This commitment was further explored in a panel discussion on the future of sustainable fashion, featuring voices like Shreya Ghodawat and Siddharth Lulla. The panel aimed to foster the Conscious Creators Community, driving meaningful sustainability conversations.

The festival also included the Mumbai Ghanta (InspirED Talks) and the 'Mumbai Matters’ panel, which showcased social impact and well-being discussions and explored collective actions for a more inclusive Mumbai. Esteemed speakers, including Ajit Kumar Jain and Pooja Bajaj, contributed to these thought-provoking sessions.

In addition to keynote speakers and panels, SIIF 2025 hosted a variety of competitions and hackathons. The XR Hackathon celebrated innovations in virtual reality, with winning projects ranging from VR-based fitness to medical simulations. The Mumbai Water Crisis Hackathon, under Dr. Subhajit Mukherjee’s mentorship, presented scalable water conservation solutions. The BioFashion Show spotlighted sustainable, nature-inspired designs, highlighting the festival's commitment to environmental consciousness.

Engaging the Community and Investors

The launch of the Somaiya Angel Network (SAN) was a pivotal moment, featuring speed networking between 30 startups and a panel of 51 investors. This initiative underscores the festival's role in bridging the gap between innovators and the investment community. Other notable activities included the Mumbai Hive, a collaborative effort addressing urban challenges, and the vibrant Mumbai Drum Circle, which used rhythm to foster community connection.

The festival also celebrated art and design through various workshops and exhibitions, including the Museum on Wheels by CSMVS, which showcased ancient civilizations. The Under 25 Summit at the Somaiya School of Design brought the festival to a close with creator journeys, student performances, and musical acts, underlining the festival’s inclusivity and diversity.

SIIF 2025's commitment to sustainability was evident through partnerships with organizations like Earth4Ever Conservation Foundation, which facilitated tree planting initiatives. The festival's sustainability efforts were further highlighted by creative cardboard installations from Paper Shaper.
