IIT Madras has recently introduced six new skill-based courses on the SWAYAM Plus platform in collaboration with IITM Pravartak Technologies. These courses, developed by experts from IIT Madras, cover advanced topics such as Electronic Manufacturing, CNC Machining, Comprehensive Electronics and Embedded Systems, Digital Manufacturing Practice, and Smart Manufacturing. The initiative aims to equip graduates with essential employable skills and bridge the gap between academic learning and industry needs.

SWAYAM Plus, a collaborative platform by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and IIT Madras, was launched to align with the National Education Policy's (NEP 2020) emphasis on employability-focused skilling courses. The platform currently hosts over one lakh registered learners and is supported by 55 industry partners. It also offers a variety of internships, providing students with practical experience in sectors critical to India's economic growth.
The SWAYAM Plus initiative was officially launched on 27th February 2024, focusing on employability, skilling, and fostering industry partnerships. During a workshop hosted by IIT Madras, speakers highlighted the importance of skilling in higher education and the role of technology in this process. They emphasized the need for stronger partnerships between academia and industry and the importance of reaching out to students in tier II and III cities and towns.
A significant feature of SWAYAM Plus is the introduction of a credit recognition system for industry-relevant courses. This initiative is expected to transform higher education and improve employability prospects for students. The industry has shown keen interest in recruiting students from these newly introduced programs, reflecting a positive reception towards initiatives aimed at enhancing employability through targeted skill development.
A panel discussion titled "Getting Job-Ready on Day 0" was also part of the workshop, focusing on industry expectations for graduates, challenges universities face in skilling students, and potential solutions. The discussion underscored the importance of preparing students for industry demands from day one and highlighted the role of internships in providing practical knowledge.
Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the significance of integrating online courses into academic curricula. He noted that platforms like SWAYAM/NPTEL provide students with access to high-quality educational materials, and SWAYAM Plus aims to bridge the gap between educational institutions and industries by offering skill-oriented courses that ensure students meet industry expectations upon graduation.
Overall, the introduction of these new courses marks a significant step towards aligning higher education with industry needs, providing graduates with the skills necessary to thrive in today's competitive job market. The SWAYAM Plus platform, through its focus on skilling and employability, is paving the way for a more skilled and job-ready workforce in India.
