Early Life and Education

Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla was drawn to the skies from a young age. He completed his schooling at City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, where his interest in national service and science was sparked. The Kargil War of 1999 left a lasting impact on him during his teenage years, fueling a passion for serving the country through the armed forces.

At the age of 17, he secretly appeared for the NDA (National Defence Academy) entrance examination, even while attending his sister's wedding-an early indication of his discipline and commitment.

He cleared the UPSC-conducted NDA exam and joined the NDA in Pune, where he earned a BSc in Computer Science. Upon successful completion of his military training, he was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2006 as a fighter pilot.

To further deepen his technical knowledge, Shukla pursued a Master's degree (M.Tech) in Aerospace Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru-a move that played a key role in his selection as a test pilot and future astronaut.

Military and Pilot Career

Over the years, Shubhanshu Shukla has gained extensive flying experience, logging over 2,000 flight hours on a wide range of aircraft including:

In 2019, Shukla was one of the elite pilots shortlisted by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) for India's ambitious human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. Following rigorous medical and technical evaluations, he was selected for astronaut training.

Shukla underwent advanced training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia, which included simulations, space survival training, zero-gravity exercises, and spacecraft systems education. He also completed additional mission training at ISRO's Human Spaceflight Centre in Bengaluru.

His leadership and expertise led to his selection as one of the four astronauts for India's human spaceflight program. However, due to mission readiness timelines, Shukla was offered the chance to participate in an international collaboration instead.

In June 2025, Shubhanshu Shukla flew as the pilot of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)-a private mission to the ISS developed by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX. The mission involved scientific research, space technology demonstrations, and Earth observation experiments.

With this mission, Shukla became the first Indian to fly to space in the 21st century, reviving India's human spaceflight dreams after 41 years.
