Should writing the national anthem be mandatory in 10th exams?

The common practice of singing the national anthem in schools is now being talked about in a different way. There's a new idea to include it in the 10th-grade exam as a written part.

The prospect of including the national anthem in school curricula has become a subject of discussion, sparking debates on patriotism, education, and cultural identity.

In a recent Lok Sabha session, Shri Gopal Chinnaya Shetty posed a thought-provoking question about the inclusion of the Jan-Gan-Man National Anthem in the school curriculum.

The question is as follows,

"Whether the Government has taken or proposes to take any steps to include the Jan-Gan-Man National Anthem in the school curriculum and to make it compulsory for all the students to write the same in the 10th exam in national interest" ?

In response to the posed question, the government provided a comprehensive and insightful reply, shedding light on its stance and proposed initiatives. The Minister of Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, addressed the query as,

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), 2023, and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 have given importance to the National Anthem and its presentation at the school assemblies. The NCFSE 2023, in its Chapter 2, School Processes, clearly mentions the significance of assemblies and the role of National Anthem. This document states that, the Assemblies held at school bring the whole community together and facilitate collective learning and appreciation that goes beyond the confines of the subject domains and hence, by singing National Anthem in school assemblies promotes rootedness in Indian culture and heritage, pride in being Indian and a feeling of patriotism.

The 6th standard textbook (Social and Political Life-I) developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in its Unit-I titled as Diversity, inter- alia, provides that the Songs and symbols that emerged during the freedom struggle serve as a constant reminder of our country's rich tradition of respect for diversity and India's National Anthem is one of the expressions of unity of India.
