Schools Shut in Dehradun Today Amid Heavy Rainfall Warning in Uttarakhand

Due to a severe weather forecast predicting heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand, all schools and Anganwadi centres in Dehradun have been ordered closed for today.

Schools Shut in Dehradun Today Amid Heavy Rainfall

The decision comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, signaling potentially dangerous downpours and strong winds.

Weather Situation

Dehradun is currently experiencing overcast skies and intermittent rains, with the possibility of intense showers expected throughout the day. The IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, raising concerns of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Precautionary Measures and Administrative Actions

To ensure the safety of students and staff, the district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools from classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres. Officials have urged residents, particularly those living near rivers and low-lying areas, to stay alert and be prepared for possible evacuations.

District Magistrate Prateek Jain has emphasized the need for vigilance, advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and follow updates from local authorities closely. Monitoring of river water levels and weather conditions is ongoing to respond swiftly to any emergencies.

Impact on Pilgrimage and Local Areas

The Kedarnath pilgrimage has been temporarily suspended due to the heightened risk posed by the severe weather. This suspension reflects the seriousness of the red alert and the commitment to public safety.

Other districts in Uttarakhand, including Pauri Garhwal, Tehri, Uttarkashi, and Nainital, are also under orange or red alerts, facing the threat of heavy rainfall and related hazards like landslides and floods.

Ongoing Flood Concerns

The region is still dealing with the aftermath of recent flash floods, with areas like Dharali in Uttarkashi particularly vulnerable. A temporary lake formed due to floodwaters poses a risk of bursting, which could cause further downstream flooding.

Authorities continue rescue and relief operations while urging people to remain cautious as the forecast predicts continuing heavy rains.

Safety Recommendations

  • Avoid venturing into flood-prone or landslide-susceptible zones.
  • Stay indoors during heavy rain and thunderstorms.
  • Keep emergency kits ready, including essentials like water, food, medicines, and flashlights.
  • Stay tuned to official announcements and weather updates to stay informed.

The closure of schools and the issuance of red alerts underscore the severity of the monsoon situation in Uttarakhand. Residents are encouraged to prioritize safety and cooperate with authorities during this critical time.
