Rs 100 crore budget for MOOCs by Central Government

Govt to allocate budget of Rs 100 Cr for MOOCs

Central government is expected to allocate a budget of Rs 100 crore for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and virtual classrooms for the year 2014-15.

The project is being designed to offer quality education to millions of students in schools and colleges across the country.

Earlier, this project was planned by the President Pranab Mukherjee.

The proposal is part of the new government's plans for digitalisation of the development process in the country.

The virtual classrooms and MOOCs will make it easier for home-makers and the working class to enhance their knowledge as well as qualification. By providing computer literacy across sections of the society, a national system of digital empowerment is envisaged.

MOOCs have become a rage globally in the field of higher education with their interactive mode of learning and easy accessibility.

According to government officials, virtual classroom amenities will boost the overall quality of education, tackle the lack of teachers in rural regions and provide support to students from rural sectors by offering special education which will help them crack competitive examinations.
