Reasons to re-think before applying to the “branded” college

By Anusha

When there is a brand name, everyone is after it, be it the students or the parents. All the tedious work that is involved; enrolling for the famous entrance exams, the pleading for reference letters, attending all the classes for entrance exam preparations etc. The whole idea is to get into the schools that have a big name. In doing so we may forget to consider some of the reasons listed below, which may have you thinking twice about getting into that famous college you had on mind.

1) The top spot war:
In your school you might have been the kid who topped, however, once you get into the "top" college, it is a "big" world with a lot of toppers! It is going to be a tough competition, with only a few students getting the top scores. You must put in extreme efforts to get the top spot.

2) The name does nothing:
It does not really matter which college you went to, what matters in the end would be the rank you have secured! Based on this you could get into the high paying jobs.

3) Reserved:
The most important programs offered by colleges that could catapult you to better companies after graduation are always given to the top students, be it honors, research opportunities, teach assistants etc.

4) Scholarships:
In the branded colleges your chances to get the scholarship is slim. At some of these branded colleges they do not offer the merit aid! You are more likely to receive this scholarship at a reasonable college and backup schools.

5) Balancing act:
Being a college student is when you get to know the in-depth meaning of being "you". If all of your time is spent at the library to keep up in the mad race, when will you discover the things you might want to do? For instance, pain, act, dance, making friends.

6) The "known":
There is a better chance for you to showcase your talent, your ability and your work in lesser known colleges where there is space for all due to lesser population. You get a better chance to be noticed and to be known.

7) The investment:
The brand name does come with a huge price. The known colleges will have high tuition fee. It is important to fund yourself in the right manner. If the funding is got through mortgage or on a loan, think about it. Do you wish to end up paying it all back after graduation for longer years or would you prefer paying back the comparatively lesser amount in a lesser time and spend it on yourself?

So, these are a few things you might want to think about before enrolling into the branded colleges. Giving your best is what matters, no matter where you are. Share with your views on the same here: https://www.facebook.com/oneindiaeducation
