Punjab Becomes First State to Introduce AI as Mainstream Subject for Classes 1 to 12

Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mainstream subject for students from Classes 1 to 12 across schools affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). The landmark initiative was announced by Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, marking a major step toward preparing students for a technology-driven future.

The AI curriculum will be implemented under the newly launched Sarbat.AI Project, a statewide programme designed to integrate artificial intelligence into school education. The initiative aims to equip students with future-ready digital skills while encouraging innovation, critical thinking, and responsible use of emerging technologies from an early age.

Sarbat.AI to Transform School Education

The Sarbat.AI Project was launched in the presence of education experts, technology partners, and senior officials of the School Education Department. The programme is being described as one of India's largest AI education initiatives at the school level.

According to the government, the project will gradually cover 25,172 schools and benefit nearly 31.5 lakh students studying in government and affiliated schools across Punjab. The initiative seeks to make AI education accessible to learners across urban and rural areas alike.

Phased Rollout Across Schools

The implementation of AI education will take place in phases to ensure smooth integration into the existing curriculum.

During the first phase, approximately 12,424 Computer Science teachers will spearhead classroom implementation by introducing AI concepts and practical applications to students. In the coming phases, the state plans to train more than 2 lakh teachers from different academic disciplines so that artificial intelligence can be integrated into teaching, learning, classroom activities, and assessment across subjects.

This large-scale teacher training programme is expected to build capacity among educators while helping students understand how AI can be applied across science, mathematics, languages, social sciences, and other disciplines.

Focus on Future-Ready Skills

The introduction of AI as a mainstream subject reflects Punjab's focus on preparing students for careers shaped by digital transformation. Rather than limiting AI education to higher classes, the curriculum will expose students to age-appropriate concepts from the primary level onward.

Students will gradually learn about:

  • Artificial Intelligence fundamentals
  • Digital literacy
  • Problem-solving and logical thinking
  • Ethical use of AI technologies
  • Real-world applications of AI
  • Innovation and computational thinking

The government believes that early exposure to AI will strengthen students' technological understanding and improve their readiness for higher education and future employment.

A Milestone in School Education

With this initiative, Punjab has positioned itself at the forefront of educational innovation by making AI an integral part of school learning. The Sarbat.AI programme is expected to modernise classroom education, empower teachers with new digital skills, and create opportunities for students to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

As implementation progresses, the initiative could serve as a model for other states looking to incorporate emerging technologies into their school education systems while promoting inclusive and future-oriented learning.
