The Government of India launched the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) with the goal of offering internship placements to one crore youth within the span of five years, focusing on engagement with the top 500 companies. This initiative, unveiled in the 2024-25 Budget, began its pilot phase on October 3, 2024, aiming to provide 1.25 lakh internships for the fiscal year 2024-25. As the scheme progresses, it has successfully embarked on its second round starting January 9, showcasing a promising start with companies actively updating and posting new internship positions.

Internship Opportunities For Indian Youth In 2025

In a significant step towards enhancing employment opportunities for the youth, the scheme received an overwhelming response, with over 1.27 lakh internships being offered by partner companies. This surpassed the initial target, demonstrating the scheme's efficacy in bridging the gap between qualified candidates and potential employers. According to Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harish Malhotra, the scheme garnered applications from more than 1.81 lakh applicants, with a total submission of around 6.21 lakh applications, highlighting the high level of interest and demand among the youth for quality internship opportunities.

The first round of the PMIS pilot project saw a remarkable outcome with 82,077 internship offers extended by partner companies to 60,866 candidates. This initiative not only showcased the scheme's ability to connect young talent with industry leaders but also resulted in 28,141 candidates accepting offers to embark on their internship journey as of January 29, 2025. This achievement underscores the scheme's significant impact in facilitating skill development and practical work experience among India's youth.

Harish Malhotra, in his address to the Rajya Sabha, underscored the scheme's tailored approach in matching the qualifications of applicants with the specific requirements outlined by companies for the internship positions. This meticulous matching process ensures that both companies and interns can reap the maximum benefits from their engagement, with internships that are mutually beneficial and aligned with the candidates' career aspirations and the organizations' needs.

The PMIS is not only a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing employability among Indian youth but also serves as a pivotal platform for companies to scout and nurture fresh talent. With the successful implementation of its first round and the ongoing second round, the scheme is steadily moving towards its objective of providing invaluable industry exposure to one crore young individuals, thereby equipping them with the necessary skills and experience to thrive in the professional world.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister Internship Scheme represents a significant stride towards empowering India's youth with practical skills and work experience. By fostering a robust partnership between the government, top corporations, and the young workforce, PMIS is setting a new benchmark in the realm of internships in India, promising a brighter future for the nation's budding professionals.
