Preeti Sudan has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), assuming her duties on Thursday, August 1. Sudan is a retired IAS officer from the 1983 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, with extensive experience in various government roles.

Extensive Educational Background:
Sudan holds an MPhil in Economics and an MSc in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics (LSE). Her strong academic credentials have played a pivotal role in her career, enabling her to contribute to several national programs, including Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and Ayushman Bharat.
Her professional journey also includes working as a consultant with the World Bank. She has held prominent positions such as President of COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and Vice President of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health.
Vast Experience in Government Administration:
Sudan retired as Union Health Secretary in July 2020, concluding nearly 37 years of service in various government sectors. Her state-level experience includes finance and planning, disaster management, tourism, and agriculture. She has chaired the Global Digital Health Partnership and was a member of the World Health Organization's independent panel for pandemic preparedness and response.
Her efforts have led to significant legislative achievements such as the National Medical Commission Act and the ban on e-cigarettes, highlighting her commitment to public health and policy reform.
Role at UPSC:
Before becoming chairperson, Sudan joined UPSC as a member on November 29, 2022. Her appointment brings an experienced leader to UPSC who will leverage her extensive background in various government departments. Under her leadership, UPSC is expected to achieve new milestones by strengthening its organizational framework.
