PM Modi Urges Teachers to Address Screen Time, Drug Risks at National Teachers Awards Interaction
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday interacted with the recipients of the National Teachers Awards 2026 at his residence at Lok Kalyan Marg, highlighting the expanding role of educators in supporting students' academic, social and personal development.
The interaction brought together 82 teachers and educators from different parts of the country. The awardees spoke about their teaching journeys and shared innovative practices that have helped make classrooms more interactive, practical and student-focused.
Among the 82 awardees, 48 teachers were selected from the Department of School Education and Literacy, 21 faculty members came from higher education institutions and polytechnics, and 13 skill trainers were recognised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Teachers Have a Role Beyond Classroom Education
During the interaction, PM Modi stressed that teachers should look beyond students' academic performance and remain attentive to their behaviour, interests and everyday difficulties.
He pointed to changes in family structures and the increasing challenges faced by children, noting that these developments have further strengthened the responsibility of teachers. Educators can often identify changes in a student's behaviour at an early stage and provide appropriate guidance and support.
The Prime Minister also raised concerns over drug addiction among young people. He encouraged teachers to remain vigilant, recognise possible warning signs and help students move towards positive and healthy activities.
He further called on educators to protect children's natural curiosity and innocence while guiding their interests towards constructive learning and personal growth.
PM Modi Raises Concern Over Excessive Screen Use
Excessive screen time among children was another major issue highlighted during the interaction. PM Modi urged teachers to work closely with parents to ensure that students maintain a healthy balance between digital activities and other aspects of life.
He specifically drew attention to late-night mobile phone use and encouraged educators and parents to monitor children's digital habits. Students should also be motivated to spend time on sports, physical exercise, creative activities and other productive pursuits.
The emphasis on reducing excessive screen exposure reflects the need to create healthier routines for children while ensuring that technology remains a useful learning tool rather than becoming a source of excessive dependence.
Emphasis on Practical Learning and NEP
Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP), the Prime Minister encouraged teachers to connect classroom concepts with real-world experiences. He stressed that education should extend beyond textbooks and examinations.
Teachers were encouraged to introduce students to practical skills and help them appreciate the dignity of labour. Exposure to hands-on learning and real-life situations can help students understand how academic knowledge applies outside the classroom.

The interaction with the award-winning educators highlighted how the role of teachers is evolving. Along with delivering academic instruction, teachers are increasingly expected to support students' emotional well-being, encourage healthy lifestyles and develop their confidence and values.
