Odisha Introduces PM-USHA Initiative to Revolutionize Higher Education

The Odisha government has introduced the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) with the aim of elevating higher education standards across the state. This ambitious initiative was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and the Union Ministry of Education. The signing ceremony was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan, and state Higher Education Minister Suryabans Suraj.

Odisha Introduces PM-USHA Initiative

The central government has committed a substantial Rs 500 crore to enhance and develop infrastructure within Odisha's higher education institutions. Minister Pradhan underscored August 31 as a pivotal moment for the state's educational sector, highlighting that this program is in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The PM-USHA initiative is designed to foster access, equity, and excellence in higher education throughout Odisha. The funding distribution includes 60% from the central government and 40% from the state government. This initiative aims to transform Odisha's state universities into world-class institutions, equipping students with the skills needed for the 21st century.

Key Goals of PM-USHA

Chief Minister Charan articulated the initiative's primary goal of upskilling one crore students and establishing Odisha as a center of knowledge excellence. He also shared plans to grant greater autonomy to state universities, reflecting promises made in the BJP's election manifesto. The PM-USHA program will focus on revamping curricula, enhancing teacher training, upgrading infrastructure, and boosting employability. These measures are expected to foster regional equity and contribute to sustainable development.

Minister Pradhan described the launch as a landmark event for Odisha's educational landscape, emphasizing its alignment with the NEP 2020's goals. By focusing on curriculum updates, teacher training, and improved infrastructure, PM-USHA aims to transform Odisha's state universities into globally competitive institutions. This initiative is set to provide students with crucial skills for today's job market and ensure that higher education in the state reaches new heights.

The central government's investment of Rs 500 crore highlights its dedication to advancing higher education in Odisha, ensuring better access and quality education for all students. This transformative program promises to significantly impact the higher education sector in Odisha, setting a new standard for educational excellence.
