The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a Central Sector Scheme designed to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and help reduce school dropouts after Class 8. Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to selected Class 9 students who qualify through the selection examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory governments. The scholarship is subsequently renewed from Classes 10 to 12, subject to the prescribed academic requirements.

The scheme is applicable to students studying in State Government, Government-aided and local-body schools. The scholarship amount is ₹12,000 per year, and eligible beneficiaries receive the amount through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts.

NMMS Scholarship 2026-27: Eligibility

Students whose parental income from all sources does not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per annum are eligible, subject to other scheme conditions. Candidates must generally have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class 7, with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST students, to appear for the selection test.
