The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the establishment of two new medical colleges in Bihar, providing a significant boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state. Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran) and Shri Ram Janki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur have received permission to begin MBBS admissions from the 2026-27 academic session.

The two institutions will offer 50 MBBS seats each, adding a total of 100 new MBBS seats in Bihar. The permissions have been granted through Letters of Permission (LoPs) issued by the NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

NMC Approval for Two New Bihar Medical Colleges

According to the latest reports, the NMC has cleared the two institutions after the required assessment and regulatory process. Applications had earlier been submitted seeking permission to establish the colleges with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students each. Following the assessment and appeal process, permission has initially been granted for 50 seats at each college for 2026-27.

The NMC's undergraduate medical college records and seat-related information are part of its regulatory framework for MBBS education in the country. The Commission had also published the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year in July.

Government Medical College Chhapra MBBS Seats

Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran) has been permitted to admit 50 MBBS students in the 2026-27 academic session. The approval is expected to create additional opportunities for medical aspirants from Saran and neighbouring districts.

The availability of a new government medical college in the region could also reduce the need for students to travel to distant cities for medical education, subject to the applicable NEET UG counselling and admission process.

Shri Ram Janki Medical College Samastipur MBBS Seats

Shri Ram Janki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur has also received permission for an annual intake of 50 MBBS students for 2026-27. The LoP for the Samastipur institution was issued on September 3, 2026, according to reports.

The college is expected to provide another option for students seeking MBBS admission in Bihar and strengthen medical education facilities in the Samastipur region.

Bihar Gets 100 New MBBS Seats

Together, the two newly approved institutions will add 100 MBBS seats to Bihar's medical education capacity for the 2026-27 academic session. The expansion is important for a state where increasing the availability of medical education and trained healthcare professionals remains a key priority.

The new colleges are also expected to contribute to the development of healthcare services in their respective regions. As MBBS programmes become operational, the institutions can support the availability of trained doctors and expand access to specialised healthcare services over time.
