In a significant move to reshape the landscape of higher education in India, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has announced a new three-year BA (Honours) programme, with an optional fourth year for students aiming for a research degree. This innovative programme, set to welcome its first batch in July 2025, aims to revolutionize the way social sciences and humanities are taught, with a distinct professional outlook. NLSIU, known for pioneering the integrated five-year BA LLB (Honours) programme, is leveraging its 35 years of educational experience to introduce this course. The curriculum is designed to build upon the faculty's existing expertise, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education without the need for establishing a new faculty.

The programme's inception was announced by NLSIU Vice Chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy, who emphasized the university's vision of creating a curriculum fit for the future yet distinctively unique. "We are looking to develop something that is responsive to 2025, but is completely different," Krishnaswamy stated, underlining the ambition to provide a terminal degree that equips students with all the necessary skills and knowledge in their field. This approach reflects NLSIU's commitment to offering education that is both forward-thinking and grounded in professional reality.
Admissions and Academic Structure
The BA (Honours) programme is accessible to anyone who has completed their higher secondary education (equivalent to 10+2), with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks for the general category and 45% for the SC/ST category. Prospective students currently in their final year of higher secondary education can also apply, provided they meet the academic criteria upon completion. Admissions will be determined through the all-India written admissions test, the NLSAT-BA, with the application process set to open in January next year and the deadline for submissions on March 23. The NLSAT-BA exam is scheduled for April 27, 2025, with the final list of admissions to be announced by the end of May, and classes commencing on July 1, 2025.
The academic structure of the course is designed to offer students a broad-based education while allowing for specialization in emerging areas. Students will have the chance to learn Indian languages and engage in hands-on learning through practice courses. Fields such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, film-making, business consulting, and digital journalism are just some of the areas where students can gain practical experience. Furthermore, the programme mandates that students complete at least one internship each year, enhancing their professional development and readiness.
Unique Opportunities and Programme Details
For those who excel in the first three years, there is an opportunity to enter a fourth year, dedicated to research. Selected students will undertake a 20,000-word dissertation on a subject of their choice, culminating in a BA (Honours with Research) degree. This segment of the programme underscores NLSIU's emphasis on research and original thought. The NLSIU has capped the programme's intake at 60 students for the academic year 2025-26, ensuring a focused and intensive educational experience for those admitted.
Before the launch of this programme, NLSIU conducted extensive consultations with eminent academics and practitioners to shape a curriculum that meets the highest educational standards. This collaborative effort underscored the university's commitment to creating a programme that is not only academically rigorous but also highly relevant to the professional landscape.
In conclusion, the introduction of the BA (Honours) programme by NLSIU marks a significant milestone in Indian higher education. By combining a strong foundation in social sciences and humanities with practical, professional training, NLSIU aims to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world. With a robust curriculum, a focus on research, and a comprehensive admissions process, the programme is set to become a beacon for students seeking a dynamic and multifaceted education.
