NLSIU Bengaluru Cancels 34th Annual Convocation Scheduled for September 12
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has cancelled its 34th Annual Convocation, which was scheduled to take place on September 12, 2026. The university announced the decision in a notification issued on August 27, citing "unavoidable circumstances."
According to the university, the convocation could not be conducted as scheduled despite the collective efforts made to organise the event. The 2026 graduating batch will instead be conferred their degrees in absentia.
NLSIU Convocation Cancelled for 2026 Graduating Batch
NLSIU has said that alternative arrangements will be made to ensure that graduating students receive their degree certificates. Students are expected to receive their certificates through courier or may be given an option to collect them from the university campus.
The university will also share a new form and the process through which graduating students can indicate their preference for receiving their certificates.
The alternative arrangements will be subject to the necessary approvals from the university's governing bodies.
NLSIU Had Earlier Announced September 12 Convocation
The university had previously proposed September 12, 2026, as the date for its annual convocation. The Academic Administration team had informed the graduating students about the proposed date through an email sent on August 3.
However, in its latest communication, NLSIU said that the 34th Annual Convocation would not be held as planned due to circumstances that it described as unavoidable.
The cancellation means that members of the 2026 graduating batch will not attend the scheduled convocation ceremony. Instead, their degrees will be formally conferred in absentia through the alternative process announced by the university.
Degree Certificate Collection Details
NLSIU has indicated that graduating students will have options concerning the receipt of their degree certificates. These are expected to include receiving the certificates by courier or collecting them from the campus.
Further instructions will be communicated to students through a new form and process. Graduating students are therefore advised to monitor official university communications for details regarding certificate delivery, collection and submission of preferences.
NLSIU Students and Alumni Raise BCI Concerns
The cancellation announcement comes shortly after concerns were raised publicly by members of the NLSIU 2026 graduating batch and more than 120 alumni regarding an earlier action by the Bar Council of India (BCI) involving the outgoing batch of students at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.
In a communication dated August 15, the students and alumni criticised the BCI's now-withdrawn action and called for an unconditional apology to the NALSAR student and faculty community.
They also expressed their disapproval of the proposed attendance of BCI Chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at NLSIU's upcoming convocation.
The university's August 27 notification, however, cites only "unavoidable circumstances" as the reason for cancelling the 34th Annual Convocation and does not provide further details about the circumstances.
What NLSIU Graduating Students Should Do
The 2026 graduating students should wait for the university's next communication regarding the alternative degree-conferral process. They may need to submit their preferences through the new form once it is made available.
Students should also keep their contact and delivery details updated and regularly check official NLSIU communications for instructions on certificate collection or courier delivery.
The university's latest decision ensures that the graduating batch will still receive their degrees despite the cancellation of the physical convocation ceremony.
